  • The Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS) in COVID-19 Disease: Where We Are 3 Years after the Beginning of the Pandemic. [Review]
    Microorganisms. 2024 Mar 14; 12(3)Prato M, Tiberti N, … Longoni SS
  • The RAS is a hormonal system playing a pivotal role in the control of blood pressure and electrolyte homeostasis, the alteration of which is associated with different pathologies, including acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). As such, it is not surprising that a number of studies have attempted to elucidate the role and balance of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in COVID-19. In this re…
  • Drug-Drug Interactions in Patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. [Journal Article]
    Pharmaceutics. 2024 Feb 21; 16(3)Bischof T, Schaller C, … Schoergenhofer C
  • Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a potential life-threatening, heterogenous, inflammatory lung disease. There are no data available on potential drug-drug interactions (pDDIs) in critically ill patients with ARDS. This study analyzed pDDIs in this specific cohort and aimed to investigate possible associations of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as an underlying cause of ARDS and t…
  • Bulk and Single-Cell RNA Sequencing Elucidate the Etiology of Severe COVID-19. [Review]
    Int J Mol Sci. 2024 Mar 14; 25(6)Huminiecki Ł
  • Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a type of pneumonia caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. It can cause acute pulmonary and systemic inflammation, which can lead to death in severely ill patients. This study explores the potential reasons behind severe COVID-19 and its similarities to systemic autoimmune diseases. This study reviewed unbiased high-throughput gene expression datasets, includ…
  • Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation in Pregnancy. [Review]
    J Clin Med. 2024 Mar 13; 13(6)Romenskaya T, Longhitano Y, … Zanza C
  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a cardiac or pulmonary function support system that is used in cases of refractory organ failure in addition to conventional treatment. Currently, Level I evidence is not yet available, which reflects improved outcomes with ECMO in pregnant women, the use in pregnancy should be indicated in selected cases and only in specialized centers. We searched a…
  • Effectiveness of Helmet-CPAP in mild to moderate coronavirus type 2 hypoxemia: An observational study. [Journal Article]
    Med Intensiva (Engl Ed). 2024 Mar 26 [Online ahead of print]Fajardo-Campoverdi A, Orellana-Cáceres JJ, … Rebolledo K
  • CONCLUSIONS: The use of Helmet CPAP, when compared to HFNO, was an effective therapeutic ventilatory support strategy to reduce the risk of intubation in patients with mild to moderate hypoxemia caused by coronavirus type 2 in inpatient units other than intensive care. The limitations associated with the difference in size, age and severity between the arms could generate bias.
  • Association of Inflammatory Markers With Disease Progression and the Severity of COVID-19. [Journal Article]
Cureus. 2024 Feb; 16(2):e54840.Patel SV, Pathak JM, … Patel A
  • Introduction In December 2019, there was a massive outbreak of viral pneumonia, which had a high case fatality rate. Genetic sequencing of the virus showed similarity with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV). It was later named novel coronavirus 2019 while the disease it caused was given the nomenclature of COVID-19. This deadly pneumonia outbreak was declared a pandemic by t…
  • Optimal Prone Position Duration in Patients With ARDS Due to COVID-19: The Omelette Pilot Trial. [Journal Article]
Respir Care. 2024 Mar 26 [Online ahead of print]Sáez de la Fuente I, Marcos Morales A, … Sánchez Izquierdo Riera JÁ
  • CONCLUSIONS: Among subjects with severe ARDS due to COVID-19, there was no difference in 28-d VFDs between prolonged and standard PP strategy. However, prolonged PP was associated with a longer ICU stay, increased use of neuromuscular blockers, and greater muscular impairment. This suggests that prolonged PP is not superior to the current recommended standard of care.
  • Regulation of cellular senescence by innate immunity. [Journal Article]
    Biophys Rep. 2023 Dec 31; 9(6):338-351.Hou J, Zheng Y, Gao C
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, the interplay between the processes of immunity and senescence is drawing more and more intensive attention. SARS-CoV-2 infection induces senescence in lung cells, failure to clear infected cells and increased presence of inflammatory factors could lead to a cytokine storm and acute respiratory disease syndrome (ARDS), which together with aging and age-associated dis…
  • Multidisciplinary Consensus on the Management of Non-Invasive Respiratory Support in the COVID-19 Patient. [Practice Guideline]
    Arch Bronconeumol. 2024 Mar 04 [Online ahead of print]Luján M, Cinesi Gómez C, … Egea Santaolalla C
  • Acute respiratory failure due to COVID-19 pneumonia often requires a comprehensive approach that includes non-pharmacological strategies such as non-invasive support (including positive pressure modes, high flow therapy or awake proning) in addition to oxygen therapy, with the primary goal of avoiding endotracheal intubation. Clinical issues such as determining the optimal time to initiate non-in…
