- Investigating the impact of surgical masks on behavioral reactions to facial emotions in the COVID-19 era. [Journal Article]Front Psychol. 2024; 15:1359075.FP
- The widespread use of surgical masks during the COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges in interpreting facial emotions. As the mouth is known to play a crucial role in decoding emotional expressions, its covering is likely to affect this process. Recent evidence suggests that facial expressions impact behavioral responses only when their emotional content is relevant to subjects' goals. Thus, thi…

- The impact of COVID-19 on healthcare booking and cancellation patterns: time series analysis of private healthcare service utilisation in Finland. [Journal Article]BMC Health Serv Res. 2024 Apr 18; 24(1):483.BH
- CONCLUSIONS: The reduction in in-person appointments and the increase in the utilisation of digital services was likely a contributing factor in the decrease of the utilisation of diagnostic and imaging services throughout the study period. Utilisation of specialist care and hospital services were not affected. Cancellations contributed to the changes in service utilisation only during the first weeks of the pandemic.

- Use of serum KL-6 and chest radiographic severity grade to predict 28-day mortality in COVID-19 patients with pneumonia: a retrospective cohort study. [Journal Article]BMC Pulm Med. 2024 Apr 18; 24(1):187.BP
- CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that the nomogram based on KL-6 and RSG might be a potential method for evaluating 28-day mortality in COVID-19 patients. A high combined score might indicate a poor outcome in COVID-19 patients with pneumonia.

- ERSegDiff: a diffusion-based model for edge reshaping in medical image segmentation. [Journal Article]Phys Med Biol. 2024 Apr 18 [Online ahead of print]PM
- Medical image segmentation is a crucial field of computer vision. Obtaining correct pathological areas can help clinicians analyze patient conditions more precisely. We have observed that both CNN-based and attention-based neural networks often produce rough segmentation results around the edges of the regions of interest. This significantly impacts the accuracy of obtaining the pathological area…

- When Imagination Feels Like Reality: A Case Study of False Memories and Maladaptive Daydreaming in Visual Impairment. [Case Reports]Case Rep Psychiatry. 2024; 2024:9391645.CR
- CONCLUSIONS: This first reported case of confabulations in an individual with MD and visual disability suggests daydreams could potentially be mistaken for actual events in some MD cases. While sensitive, more research is needed on the prevalence of false memories among individuals with MD. The default mode network, prefrontal cortex, and their connectivity may be implicated in generating vivid daydreams and misattributing them to actual episodic events. Understanding the relationship between sensory impairments, dissociation, and susceptibility to memory distortions could inform interventions to improve reality testing for some MD patients.

- Genetic overlap and causality between COVID-19 and multi-site chronic pain: the importance of immunity. [Journal Article]Front Immunol. 2024; 15:1277720.FI
- CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we identified several functional genes and underscored the pivotal role of the inflammatory system in the correlation between the paired traits. Notably, heat shock proteins emerged as potential objective biomarkers for chronic pain symptoms in individuals with COVID-19. Additionally, the ubiquitin system might play a role in mediating the impact of COVID-19 on chronic pain. These findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the pleiotropy between COVID-19 and chronic pain, offering insights for therapeutic trials.

- Impact of COVID-19 on acute appendicitis presentation, management and pathology findings in adult and paediatric populations. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2024; 19(4):e0300357.Plos
- CONCLUSIONS: Year 1 of the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with delayed presentation of acute appendicitis in adults and children. In adults, an overall reduction in appendicectomy operations, increased use of pre-operative diagnostic imaging, and fewer specimens showing simple acute appendicitis or non-diagnostic features, collectively support appropriate restriction of surgery for those patients with a more certain acute appendicitis diagnosis.
