Polioviruses (genus Enterovirus ) are small, nonenveloped viruses with a single-stranded RNA genome. Polioviruses are rapidly inactivated by heat, formaldehyde, chlorine, and ultraviolet light. There are 4 poliovirus serotypes, 1, 2 and 3, that have minimal heterotypic immunity between them.
