Online Certificate Course - Organizational Project Management for Development Organizations and NGOs
Tue, 21 Mar 2023 04:11:28 +0000
Organizational Project Management (OPM) is defined as the execution of an organization's strategies through projects by combining the systems of portfolio management, program management, and project management.
OPM is based on the idea that there is a correlation between an organization’s capabilities in project, program, and portfolio management, and the organization’s effectiveness in implementing its strategy. The goal of an organization’s strategy is the translation of its vision and mission into specific actions that will deliver maximum value to its stakeholders, including donors and beneficiaries. Achieving the strategy ensures continued growth in development results and sustainable competitive advantage. This is especially true in today’s increasingly competitive global environment, where organizations are constantly seeking ways to improve their capabilities and performance in the delivery of their strategy.
The goal of OPM is to ensure organizations are doing the right projects and that the projects are doing the right things.
This is an advanced course on the concepts, processes, and methods required to ensure that all projects and programs are aligned with the organization’s development goals. OPM is a flexible framework that facilitates the integration of all projects and programs to support the organization's development goals. This course is especially useful for anyone working in a development organization that is seeking to improve the delivery of a project, program and ensure they are aligned with the strategic objectives, this course is particularly beneficial for organizations that do not have a unified project management approach and those in the process of improving or sustaining their current project management framework. Every development organization should mandate all its project and program managers to take this course if not already so done! The earlier the best!" Henry Njakoi, Tanzania.
"This is one of the best online courses I have ever done in my 15 years career in the Not-for-Profit sector and it has greatly improved my knowledge on the relevance of introducing a holistic approach to manage development projects through the Organizational Project Management (OPM) framework. The value addition of a good OPM is enormous and I can't wait to start implementing it in any organization I work for. This course is useful for everyone working in the Not-for-Profit sector where project implementation is the channel through which the goal and objectives of the organizational strategy are achieved. " Mohamed Silla, ActionAid - Sierra Leone.
"I am not new in the field of project management. In fact, I have been a PM practitioner for many years now. But I got pleasantly surprised (and humbled) to realize through this course, our teacher and through my co-learners that I still have much to learn about it. I am glad I chose to enroll in this new course of PM4DEV at this time, as it has been a very enriching, mentally stimulating and mindset changing experience for me. Very grateful indeed! " Marietta Rios, World Vision International - Philippines.
"I have worked as a Program Manager for over four years, but this course has expanded on my understanding of Organizational Project Management. I appreciate PM4DEV for fostering my professional development." Ibrahim Turay, Health Poverty Action - Sierra Leone.

“This was one of the most well organized, researched and structured eLearning course I have ever done with tremendous support from the tutor as if he knew me personally who even wrote to me to enquire if I had any challenges when I lagged behind and offered to help in any way possible. Health Systems Through Crisis And Recovery - XIII ed.
Mon, 20 Mar 2023 00:44:49 +0000
Background
Spurred by misrule, conflict, impoverishment, social upheavals, environmental degradation and displacement, crises multiple the world over. Shocks and stressors intersect, prolonging crises and thwarting recovery attempts. Health care – starved of capacity and resources - is unable to respond to old and new needs.
The complexity of these turbulent contexts poses daunting challenges to health workers – both national and international – who are called to provide health services and contribute to their recovery. The poor grasping of the context and of the health determinants at play has generated misconceived interventions resulting in fragmentation, waste and ineffectiveness.
This training programme intends to critically review this situation, in light of experiences gathered in an array of crises, past and present. This empirical foundation is used to suggest appropriate conceptual tools aimed at engaging effectively in uncertain and unstable settings.
The Course, held for the first time in 2005, has evolved substantially since then. It is actively kept in progress, by constantly updating its contents, introducing new study topics and materials, and inviting new experienced lecturers. The Course programme maintains a degree of flexibility to discuss in detail topics of particular interest to participants. The Course focuses on health issues, but it is open to professionals from other disciplines.
Training objectives
• Introduce and engage participants in a critical analysis of crisis-ridden contexts and of the health services available in them.
• Analyse and reflect upon the challenges and difficulties faced in producing and supplying health services in crisis settings or recovering from one.
• Identify and discuss the main features and distortions affecting health services during acute or chronic crisis and recovery processes.
• Introduce participants to recovery processes, to the main challenges they pose and to the opportunities they provide to correct long-standing distortions and foster the emergence of effective, efficient, fair and sustainable health systems.
• Introduce participants to the existing literature in these areas and stimulate their interest in conducting further research.
Teaching methods
The whole Course is practice-oriented and constant references will be made to real-life scenarios. Many of the approaches proposed will be tested in practical exercises. Ample space will be devoted to testimonies and considerations drawn from on the personal experience of trainers and participants.
Course programme
The Course content is updated and modified every year. These are some of the main topics regularly discussed:
- The crisis environment; international and humanitarian law; development, the aid system and its politics; aid management. Contributions of social sciences and other disciplines to health intelligence.
- Systems thinking applied to management practice, including communication, information analysis and responses of health systems to shocks and stressors.
- Health policy analysis, planning and financing. Private and informal healthcare provision. Evaluating interventions.
- Availability and utilisation of health-related resources: personnel, medicines, facilities, and their management.
- Health service delivery issues: controlling communicable diseases, serving marginalised communities, addressing demand-side barriers, improving quality of care.
- Contributing to the recovery of disrupted health systems, through analysis, research, negotiation, appraisal of options, forecasting and implementation.
How to register

The academic curriculum of the Master programme is divided into two phases:
Distance-learning Phase: 20 November 2023 – 12 January 2024;
Residential Phase: 31 January – 30 June 2024.
The Graduation Project, at the end of the residential phase, will consist in a Moot Court simulation that will help students to refine their skills in written and oral courtroom advocacy on selected matters of substantive international criminal law.
The Graduation Ceremony will take place on 12 July 2024.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be awarded an LL.M. degree officially issued by UPEACE.

Under regular circumstances, it annually runs more than 450 programmes and projects involving approximately 11,000 people from over 180 countries, also offering to its guests leisure, dining, and sports facilities.
The LL.M. is jointly organized by UNICRI and the University for Peace (UPEACE).
UNICRI is one of the main training and research institutes of the UN System. It was established in 1968 and is mandated to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and promoting criminal justice. Over the years the Institute has developed a sound expertise in research and training, which is reflected in the organization of several capacity-building activities and specialized postgraduate courses.
The University for Peace (UPEACE), headquartered in Costa Rica, is a Treaty Organization established in 1980 through an International Agreement approved by the United Nations General Assembly in Resolution 35/55, and has the mandate "to provide humanity with an international institution of higher education for peace and with the aim of promoting among all human beings the spirit of understanding, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, to stimulate cooperation among peoples and to help lessen obstacles and threats to world peace and progress, in keeping with the noble aspirations proclaimed in the Charter of the United Nations".
